These structures are built to hold back soil during construction, as well as other pressure sources such as displaced earthworks, rocks and various building aggregates, and water. The retaining walls positioned by our formwork contractors at South East Formwork are created using our renowned formwork methods and reinforced concrete, known for its durability and resilience. We offer a complete service which includes the excavation process, installation of the preferred supporting structure, and its permanent fixture, if required.
Commonly used during basement construction, the types of retaining walls we offer our residential and commercial clients are as follows:
The most common form of retaining walls used in construction, cantilever systems are usually built from reinforced or precast concrete. With a significant base slab, referred to as the heel, positioned underneath the soil, and a vertical stem holding it all in place, its counterbalance is a smaller extension of the heel which is referred to as the toe. Cantilever systems are suitable for holding back up to 10m of dislodged earth.
These installations are self-reliant, using their own weight to hold back up to 3m of the surrounding earth. The oldest form of retaining walls in construction, their sheer size prevents sliding or overturning due to enlarged bases and angled structures. They are built using masonry, stone, or – in our case – reinforced concrete. Gravity retaining walls come in different forms, depending on the project, and include crib and gabion designs.
Using some of the relocated soil as a barrier against itself is one of the most economical ways of constructing a retaining wall. Using a predesigned geogrid, steel mesh, or a variety of other frameworks, the weight of the soil used in addition to these reinforcement systems provides a sufficient method of containment. Soil retaining walls are especially suited for sloped and angled areas.
